One of the main questions we get asked at Tech Talent South is simply, “What’s your best advice to students looking to attend a coding bootcamp?”
After a few good years, and many students later, we can confidently report that knowing one thing will change the results of your bootcamp experience. That one thing?
Knowing why you want to break into the technology ecosphere, and with what particular skill set, will change your definition of success, ROI, and could even change the type of course you dive into!
Before you actually choose a program, take some time to define your ideal outcome.
Maybe you have a specific goal in mind and you want to learn to code because…
Or maybe, you don’t have any idea of what you want to do at all!
All you need to know to get started is that you find code interesting and want to see the path it takes you on. If this sounds like you, it’s likely you don’t want to pigeon-hole yourself in one particular direction.
Or maybe you thought you knew, but changed your mind! That’s totally normal.
For example, it is possible to start with the notion that front-end is your jam, only to find out that you LOVE data! Having the flexibility to choose your own adventure as you go is key.
The list of possibilities goes on, and the end goal opportunities differ based on specifically which skill set you end up with.
Whether it is Ruby or Python, iOS or web, Big Data or Design, there are many paths you can take in the world of code and, after the fundamentals, a one-size-fits all program isn't necessarily the best option. Keep your ideal outcome at the top of mind when making ALL of your coding education decisions (before, during and after attending a program).
At TTS, we believe you should always be able to choose your own adventure. This is why we designed our courses to be modular components that can be flexibly pieced together for your exact path.
Take these scenarios for example:
Example 1: Let’s say you work in digital marketing, and want some extra skills in your wheelhouse. You can’t really take time out of your work day to learn, but you’re eager to learn in the off-hours.
No problem! At TTS, you could take a couple of weekends to learn about inbound marketing and website analytics with our Grow Your Brand and Google Analytics workshops! On top of that, you could pick up some basic web coding skills in the evenings with Intro to Web Design and Creation.
Example 2: You want to learn how to build applications on multiple platforms, in fact, you’ve got an idea that really needs to live on both the web and as a mobile application.
Excellent! You could dive right into full-stack web development with Code Immersion, pick up some advanced knowledge with Next Level Rails, and learn the mobile side in iOS development. What’s even sweeter, is all three can be taken at the pace of just a few nights a week.
These are just a couple of scenarios, but there are many more student stories sitting in our class seats. Here are just a few more of the typical ideal outcomes to give you an idea of the different paths in the land of code:
Now, these recipes probably look like a lot of time in class. But, at Tech Talent South we know what it is like to have a busy schedule, which is why we provide classes in not only a flexible-modular format, but as part-time options as well.
Bottom line: You are doing a lot in life, and you shouldn’t have to put your life on hold in order to move forward. As long as you take the time to find something that works with your life, your pace, and your goals - You will be on your way to doing something BIG!
