It’s no secret that careers in data science are increasingly popular. Considered one of the most lucrative jobs in 2018, more and more individuals are pursuing this career track. But, how do you fit learning data science into your day? Use this guide to explore the field, the job opportunities associated, and compare and contrast three top programs to find your perfect match:
Data Science combines statistical analysis and scientific research methods to help glean insights or predictions based on data patterns. People who work in Data Science are able to analyze large amounts of data and not only make sense of it but create purposeful and applicable predictions for the organization for which they work.
Every industry uses data science on some level, especially those dependent on consumers.
Market Growth: “Data scientist is the best job in America for the third consecutive year, according to Glassdoor’s Annual Best Jobs in America Report.”
Data Scientist isn’t the only job you can get in this field, however. Others include:
Data Analyst: A data analyst is considered a junior data scientist. Data Analysts need to understand programming, machine learning, data visualization and statistics in order to successfully fulfill Data Analyst job requirements. This is a great jumping-off point for those looking to enter the Data Science field.
Data Engineer: Data Engineers build out the systems that organize otherwise formless data. Typically having a software engineering background, Data Engineers are able to build and code databases, write complex queries, and scale multiple machines simultaneously. This is considered an advance Data Science career.
Data Architect: Much like a Data Engineer, Data Architects are able to design and organize the data architecture of an organization or company. Data Architects determine the most effective ways to organize, store and manage data, to make it easier for individuals to access and interact with. This is also considered an advanced Data Science career.
Data Science is considered one of the most lucrative careers in the world. Forbes published an article at the beginning of the year celebrating Data Science as the best job in America, with 4,524 job openings as of January 30th, 2018.
Some articles have even claimed Data Science to be the most lucrative career of the millennium. With the onset of new technologies and customer-facing applications, it is no surprise that the success of such systems is dependent on Data Science.
So, you want to learn data science but aren’t quite sure how to align it with your daily life? Each data science bootcamp offers a distinct learning style, time commitment and skill set. Achieve your goals by finding the right program. Compare and contrast Dataquest, Thinkful and Metis data science to see which style of learning is best suited for your schedule.
Dataquest is an ideal program for a busy parent or individual with a full-time job. This informal course is packed with great information and tools, but only requires 10 hours of commitment per week. Their approach uses interactive coding challenges as opposed to video lectures, to ensure students are actively implementing what they learn as they learn. Their project-driven focus helps students learn skills quickly. You will leave the course with a portfolio of projects.
Courses Offered: Become a Data Scientist, Become a Data Analyst, Become a Data Engineer
Time Commitment: 10hrs/ week
Location: Online only
Student Review: "A Really Awesome Learning Environment"
Dataquest has a really awesome learning platform. Whether you are a beginner to programming and the other aspects of data science they will take you from zero to 100 with such ease and a gentle pace at each step. I looked at several options before deciding on Dataquest but when I tried their platform I was amazed at how well thought out things were. Plus I could do the sessions including the programming right in my browser which meant I could do tutorials in my downtime on my iPad or my phone and not have to wait to get to my computer to do the practice code. I have not completed my program as yet but I’m excited and looking forward to my achievements. If you haven’t tried them I’m not certain what you are waiting for (Just want to say that this isn’t a paid review. I just think that the platform is great).
Thinkful offers what we consider a hybrid program. Offering 1-on-1 mentorship from great teachers and a custom-built curriculum, Thinkful is the perfect program for individuals who need a full-time course at a flexible pace. This flexibility allows individuals to study data science while continuing to work at their current job. The Data Science program combines an in-depth, project-based approach. In the fully online program you'll work side-by-side with a professional data scientist to learn analysis and experiment design, predictive modeling and classification techniques.
Thinkful’s data science program also guarantees job placement. These courses have unprecedented levels of support, with 2 hours each week of 1-on-1 mentorship, 40+ hours of Q&A sessions, and a bustling Slack community of mentors and fellow students.
Courses Offered: Data Science
Time Commitment: 60hrs/ week, 20 weeks
Location: Online, Washington DC, Portland, Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, Atlanta
Student Review: "Awesome Bootcamp!"
This has been a great journey for me coming from virtually no programming background. The coursework is really good at taking a fairly new topic and familiarizing us and eventually helping us master it. The most vital aspect of this bootcamp is the one-on-one sessions with a personal mentor twice a week, who is a very experienced developer. This really helped me a lot! On top of that, there are multiple Q&A sessions going on during the day with other mentors where you can go in and participate and ask any questions you may have. There are various milestones that you hit during the course and many projects that you create (which eventually becomes your portfolio as well). This really helps you gather whatever you've learned up to that point and make something out of it.
Metis data science is considered an in-person intensive. This full-time, 12-week data science experience hones, expands and contextualizes the skills brought in by competitive student cohorts. Incorporating traditional in-class instruction in theory and technique, students use real data to build a five-project portfolio to present to potential employers and have access to full career support throughout and after the bootcamp. Upon graduating from the Data Science Bootcamp, a student will be prepared to take an entry-level position on a Data Science team as a data scientist or data analyst. The Metis data science packed learning schedule is best suited for someone who can leave their job entirely to study as it is only offered in-person, full-time.
Courses Offered: Intro to Data Science, Data Science Immersive
Time Commitment: 40hrs/ week, 12 weeks
Location: NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle
Student Review: "Challenging and Rewarding"
I attended the Fall 2017 Bootcamp in Chicago. Prior to attending, I had done a good amount of research on ways I could get my foot in the door for a data scientist position. After speaking with Nathan Vermeiren (Program Manager at Metis), those who have hired from Metis, and alumni who have attended, I decided to go for it. (And I'm glad I did!) Metis really exceeded my expectations. The quality of instructors, career support, and students created such a great environment for those wanting to transition into data science. The technical and non-technical skills needed to succeed as a data scientist are covered in depth at Metis through many opportunities.
