TK2 Academy (Techknowledgy² Academy) is a new coding bootcamp located in the heart of South Florida offering web immersive, iOS and Android development courses. The courses focus not only on coding, but also how to teach students to think outside the box.
We had the chance to sit down with Donnavan Kirk, Founder and President, to learn more about the program.
In addition to a successful career in Basketball, Donnavan also holds and undergraduate degree in Business from DePaul University and a Masters in Education from the University of Miami, where he created HK Basketball Academy and played basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Donnavan developed a passion for technology during his professional career in Japan.
Tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to start a coding bootcamp?
There are many reasons we decided to start our coding bootcamp. There is a huge space in the technology industry, and we felt it was time Boca Raton had access to learn programming.
Creating this school embodies who I am as a person because I know the importance of having access to a location you can become more skillful and actually achieve your dreams. When I was in high school, having a basketball court nearby helped me build my skills as an athlete. I want to offer that chance to others, and bringing a tech school to Boca Raton allows me to create a space for those that want to enhance their skills and build technology.
There is a real need for the programs in Florida. The Bureau of Labor Statistics show that by 2020, there will be 1.4 million new computer related jobs, but only 400,000 computer science students. Plus, there are a ton of technology companies, transitional professionals, high school and college students that need access to these programs.
We only opened our doors in April, and we're now working to get the word out to the community. We want create a space for students to build their own technology, receive assistance from experts, and grow their business profile so that they'll be able to compete in the job market.
What sets your curriculum apart from other bootcamps? What types of resources do you offer for learning?
What plans/dreams do you have for your bootcamp over the next 5 years?
We would like to have served 1000s of students and helped them achieve successful careers.
What is the job market like where your bootcamp is based?
According to Indeed, there are over 1000 Web Developer jobs available in Florida alone. Plus, we offer lifetime career assistance.
What technologies or trends do you see gaining popularity?
I see the mobile platform growing tremendously. The VR and Augmented reality are the next huge gaming devices and making them mobile is a must. Google has already put a stamp on this movement and I know Apple will respond soon. I also see self driving cars coming sooner than we thought. This will create a tremendous amount of job opportunities for people that can program and properly manage software.
Any advice for students looking to join a bootcamp?
My advice our potential students will be to approach programming with an open mind and allow our teachers to not only teach you but also show you how to practice so that you can become a more proficient developers.
Also, do not be intimidated. There are 12 year kids that know how to code. Trust me, anybody can learn it.
