Designation has graduated over 450 alumni since its inception, with graduates going on to work in almost every type of design position imaginable. While the program has moved its campus twice since 2014 and has made many iterations to its curriculum over those years, there’s been one constant through it all: an overwhelming amount of positive feedback gained from its graduates.
Even as the program continues to evolve in Chicago at its new location at WeWork State Street, its tight-knit community of designers, mentors, advisors, and educators continue to thrive and stay in touch. Just last week, Designation had its annual alumni night, where over 60 graduates came to visit the new space and connect with one another.
Curious to hear what it’s like to attend an intensive, immersive UX/UI design program like Designation’s?
Here are what a few of their recent graduates have to say about their experience:
How did you hear about Designation? And why did you decide to attend?
“Switchup led me there. I did extensive research and decided this was the program for me. More specifically, I liked Designation because it was in-person; I need to feel engaged in order to learn things. And the biggest draw was working with real-life clients. That hands-on work was invaluable in helping me create my portfolio and truly understand what I was getting myself into.” - Alissa Del Toro
How do you think Designation helped prepare you for your job?
“Designation provided so many rounds of quality design, that by the end I was surprised by how much confidence in my work I developed. During the program, I lived and breathed UX/UI, so the concepts and skills became second nature. What really ended up tying everything together was the latter phases of Designation. The live client experience was invaluable for the ability to jump quickly into new projects, and the Career Phase created that much-needed foundation for landing a role. By the time I interviewed, I was relieved how much I genuinely understood the process of design and how well I could talk through my portfolio, which ultimately led to where I am today.”-Jeff Gombos
What was your favorite part of the Designation experience?
“The intensive learning environment. I learned much more in the three months at Designation than I did in all of my undergraduate years. It was awesome to be surrounded by amazing instructors and peers who wanted to learn just as much as I did for 9-12 hours a day. I still can’t believe how much I learned and grew in such a short period of time.” -Lacey Nixon
How would you describe your Designation experience?
“Designation proved to be one of the most challenging but growth-heavy periods of my life. I learned a great deal about both the design process and myself in a short period of time. Once I hit the ground running with Design Essentials, it felt great to take my career and life by the handle again.
I’ve also always favored practical learning over theoretical learning. Designation offered me a good balance and a lesser financial burden option when considering masters programs in design or HCI.” - Mike Jackson
Designation is transparent with the fact that it does not guarantee its participants a design job immediately after graduation; what they do guarantee is giving you the tools, communication skills, and confidence—and reinforcing the design process you defined during earlier phases in the program—you need to find your dream design job yourself.
