Do you think engineering is just about the tech industry? Well, to that I would say think again. Software engineering touches virtually every industry. From healthcare and education to things like entertainment and even transportation. Technology is a field that is transforming business industries and strategy. Gone are the days of software engineers who innovate just for the sake of having a cool gadget to sell. Society is now looking at some of our largest problems through the lens of technology.
If you’re looking at how this style of curriculum manifests itself, we don’t have to look much further than big name tech companies that are solving socially relevant problems. Take LinkedIn for example. Its platform is connecting candidates and employers on a large scale basis. They’re solving the problem of limited visibility when applying for jobs. The need for (energy efficient) speed tickle your fancy? Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. This practical application of improving cars, which are one of the most commonly used machines, wouldn’t be possible without the work of the software engineers behind the design of their vehicles.
Education is more your passion? Seesaw is empowering “students to independently document their learning with built-in creative tools, and provides an authentic audience for their work.” It may sound like a superhero movie, but NASA is actually using software engineers to help protect the world from asteroids. In fact, one of Holberton’s students was selected to work on a team at NASA doing just this. “Sinha's team looked at the problem of hunting newly fallen meteorites, the chunks of meteors that have hit the ground … Presumably, analysis of the meteorites will provide data important to determining the likelihood of future threats of asteroid strikes. ”
All of the companies above hired students trained at Holberton. Our school provides an environment where software engineering students are learning computer science theories in a practical and collaborative environment. Peer and project based learning pedagogy lends itself well to to get students ready to contribute at these impactful companies. Our curriculum is less about learning theories in the abstract, more about learning technical skills and with their real world applications. We do this by designing and upgrading the curriculum in collaboration with professionals working in the Tech industry.
Is your goal to have an impact in the world? No matter what the industry you are considering, Software Engineering is probably a great way to achieve this. The good news is that anyone 18+ is welcome to apply at Holberton. No prior software knowledge is needed, get started by applying now.
