A recent MoneyWatch article listed several up-and-coming tech cities throughout the United States, and a number of them are in the south. Huntsville, Alabama, Kansas City, Missouri and Nashville, Tennessee are just a few of the cities becoming the best places to launch a tech career.
Southern states offer a low cost of living, especially when compared to major tech hubs like San Francisco or New York City. In Lexington, Kentucky the average annual household income currently sits around $77,827. The cost of living is estimated at only $20,000 when accounting for necessities such as housing, transportation, and healthcare. Forbes released a study that reveals residents earning the average household income in Oklahoma City can anticipate an excess of $50,000 a year after accounting for necessities. “In Charlotte and Raleigh, that leftover amount exceeds $60,000.”
Salaries for tech workers in San Francisco and Silicon Valley don’t go quite as far. Even though the average annual salary for a tech worker in the Bay Area is $125,233, the extremely high cost of living means that these techies can expect to budget $100,000 or more on yearly expenses.
With the cost of living so low, technology salaries in the south can provide an extremely comfortable life. As this trend continues, it may make sense to pursue a coding education in the southern region. For your convenience, we’ve compiled a list of top coding bootcamp programs below the Mason-Dixon line.

What Students Think: “Tech Talent South Code Immersion Program”
I joined Tech Talent South in March 2018 in the Fulltime Code Immersion course as well as the Machine Learning course. My instructor was exceedingly patient with students when needed. He was also quick to point out more detailed aspects to students who wanted an in-depth look. The course-work is a great overview of what to expect when learning Ruby on Rails and a very complete introduction to programming in general. I did the precourse work and had familiarized myself with Ruby, RoR, git, and bash. If you come to this class with those skills built, you will have a great time and lots of job prospects. If you come with an eagerness to learn, but not much work done already you will learn a great deal, but it won't be very fun. Either way, it is worth every penny. - Ben Butler
