"Best kickstart to a software carreer you can ask for, worthy investment"
Best decision I have made in my life and it has paid off. I understood the risks involved with the decision to attend Coding Dojo and decided that it was time for a career change. I had no prior knowledge about software at all. You really get what you... Read More
I have heard many mixed feelings and reviews about this program, so let me clarify for those on the fence about it. You need to have the right expectations coming into this program. If you are expecting that you will show up to class, get a certificate, and have jobs lining up out the door for you: This isn't for you. This is a kickstart to push you in the right direction and your work ethic will determine how far you go. You have to understand what the mission at Coding Dojo is and why. The point is not to teach you everything there is to know about software languages, and to be honest, you will never get close to knowing it all. Software languages change and evolve every day at 100MPH and there is only way to keep up. This is where Coding Dojo comes in. You need to learn HOW TO LEARN. This is the most important skill you will learn during this program. Once you start working in this field there is a very little chance you will be using exactly what you learned at the Dojo, however the fact that you will know how to learn will keep you on pace and help you excel at your job. So for those that say that you will be learning a lot by yourself, and that the teachers don't exactly hold your hand every step of the way, well you're right and that was never really the goal. The goal is to be self-sufficient, and that requires a lot of effort and time on your part. Nobody is going to be holding your hand when your boss tells you he needs a software tool built in a language you've never heard, by the end of the week. Thankfully, that won't be a problem because you will know how to read documentation and build your first program in just a few days because Coding Dojo teaches you to learn at that pace.
Lastly, every morning at Coding Dojo you get to learn and practice white-boarding algorithms and walking your classmates through your code. This is an essential skill to land a job. Every technical interview will be challenging your white-boarding skills and problem solving ability. To get your foot in the door at a technical company, you absolutely need to be able to solve algorithms and logically walk others through it. It does not matter how many programing languages you know if you can't get past this first step. Coding Dojo provides you the resources and opportunities to sharpen this skillset.
To tie it all together, if you are willing to put in the time, effort and energy into every part of what Coding Dojo offers, it will be one of the best decisions you've made. You will be surrounded by other students and alumni who are very passionate about becoming better developers. You will learn to be a self-sufficient programmer.

"Poor Curriculum, Kind but inexperienced instructors"
The curriculum is not quite as good as something you could purchase for $10-$1000 on Udacity or Udemy. It’s poorly produced with lots of errors. Especially the videos made by the founder; they are poorly lit and ill rehearsed.
All of the instructors are... Read More
You will only get out of this what you put in (because you’ll basically have to teach yourself). Save your money and do an online boot camp while learning algorithms through many of the free competitive algorithm sites.

"My Journey into Software Development"
I came into the Coding Dojo bootcamp with very little prior coding experience. However, I found out that becoming a good developer is possible even if that person had totally different background. I also came from a different background and decided to... Read More
The reasons I chose Coding Dojo were that it offers 3 full stacks and also has a great curriculum. I gained a lot of knowledge and learned a lot from there within 14 weeks. The instructors are really helpful and knowledgeable. Their teaching strategies are really helping us to become efficient developers. Their 20 minutes rule is training us to become independent and self-sufficient developers since we have to figure out how to fix the bugs and how to improve our codes on our own by reading documents online when we work in tech industry.
I also like their career advising since the advisor is really helpful and provides us a great source of strategies and tips in networking and interview processes.
I really recommend Coding dojo to future web developers who are willing to learn and put a lot of efforts in order to become a self-sufficient developer.

"Great place to start and learn a whole lot"
Before Coding Dojo, I worked a part-time retail job. I decided to go to Coding Dojo because I had a strong passion for coding but wanted a better understanding of how people in the real world do it. They taught me me how to code on my own, by pushing... Read More

"it helped me, but don't trust their stats"
Coding dojo met but did not exceed my expectations. I went into it with an already marketable skill set and considerable knowledge of software especially in Python . But to be fair I didn't know what it took to get a job in Silicon Valley and coding dojo... Read More
Their course material is pretty good, and the instructors all cared a lot & worked hard for the students. Many had deep computer science knowledge &/or real world work experience as well.
However, I was rather put off at how blatantly disingenuous their claimed graduate job placement rate is. I took an extra month to graduate* & got a job in software development after 8 months, which puts me ahead of at least 70-80% of my classmates who graduated (and it's a tough program, out of 35-40 ppl the 1st day about 12 graduated that I know of in my cohort). Other cohorts at that time had about the same stats. All this while if I turn adblock off, practically every page features a Coding Dojo ad claiming 95% of graduates are hired w/in 6 months.
They charge you to keep using the learning platform after you graduate (unless you beg them for free access, but I never got around to it b/c I was too heated over that whole situation combined w/ the stress of job hunting & my own sour recollection of their phoney baloney job placement stats & an Eastern European girl I was briefly involved w/ before I finished studying there)
*the MEAN stack was kind of an alpha product at the time so they offered a free redo on that 4 week portion

"A Very Good Place to Get Started in Software"
Coding Dojo is a friendly, casual environment where people of all backgrounds come to learn. Ultimately, you are on your own to master the material. It's not like high school where you are given a lot of attention. It's more like college. You are given... Read More
Pros:
Thorough curriculum for 3 stacks
Very helpful instructors and teaching assistants
Many assignments to learn from
Cons:
Too much, too fast
Learning material is not detailed enough, students are expected to spend a lot of time figuring things out on their own

"Put in the work and time to get full value."
The deciding factor for Coding Dojo over other bootcamps in Chicago was presence during my research process.
When I went to the open house, the lead instructor was there as well as other staff that I would be working closely with.
During the application... Read More
On to the program: this is no secret to me, but something all students should be aware of - no bootcamp is a golden ticket. You need to come in ready to change your life and work as is your career depended on it because... It does.
I succeeded because I put in the 70+ hours a week and the instructors will tell you the same.
The instructors were great - personable, kind and helpful. That said, part of the Dojo Way is learning through struggle, so they were hands off intentionally. That is not to say they didn't care. I felt all the instructors wanted me to succeed and always pushed me to do better.
Career services was one of the more valuable parts of the bootcamp - I got resume, interview and networking tips. This is really helpful in Chicago since who you know can really help your job search.
All in all, it's a great start to a career in tech. Just be realistic with yourself on what you want to get from the program and never lose track of the fact that you will only be starting your journey once you're done.
I highly recommend.
