I loved the teachers, they were all awesome, and helped me every step of way through the course. They teach the fundamentals, then dive into the complex stuff you'd work on in the field. Halfway through the course they start helping you find jobs, and they're very dialed into the Indy Tech network, which was a lifesaver for the stress of job searching. It was well worth the time and cost to attend.

Pros: People, venue, and cohort coherence (at least mine was a classy bunch of people), plus lunch is provided (for full-time). The staff really cares about not getting you through the class but doing their job right as teachers.

Cons: Some of the curriculum... Read More is in flux, but this is constantly getting better and it doesn't mean they don't know what to teach you. The individual teachers are more than competent enough to work through anything that's a little bit under construction.

Afterward, without any college degree, I was able to make $84,000 in my first software developer job in California for a Cybersecurity company that has an app with 10 million users. Then, I ended up starting my own app company. I ended up building the entire iPhone and Android app and backend for my startup. My app has been downloaded thousands of times. We were accepted into the top startup accelerator in the world (Y Combinator) that has produced startups like Airbnb, DoorDash, and Twitch. I was working as a bartender before finding Eleven Fifty Academy. I knew I needed a career change, and I had always been in interesting in coding. The JavaScript course required a lot of work -- both in and out of the classroom. I would work on problems... Read More in the classroom and find my mind still thinking of possible solutions after class. The class changes your entire mindset and engages your problem-solving muscles. My teacher was willing to guide me to discover my own answers, allowing me to build better researching skills. I became extremely close to my classmates as we pushed each other to learn as much as we could in a 3 month period. I secured a job one month after graduation, and haven't stopped pursuing acquiring new tech skills! It's a great course, and the community really wants you to succeed here!

The instructors are extremely helpful and knowledgeable and you really get the sense that they care about your personal success. I felt supported and challenged the entire way through. EFA gives you a wide variety of different work-flow scenarios including a few group projects which helps you gain experience in the agile philosophy. I won't lie, it is a grueling bootcamp. You will be challenged, and you will put in a lot of hours but you will also learn so much, build projects you are passionate about, and gain confidence in your technical skills.

Since day one the entire school was very supportive and made sure all the students had everything they needed to succeed (including snacks, drinks and lunches).

It is a very fast paced program (as expected for being an inmmersive training) and the technology skills they teach are very relevant to the current market needs.

After attending the program for 10 weeks I was offered a full time position as a Web Developer which I accepted right away!

I cannot speak enough benefits for Eleven Fifty Academy as a resource for anyone motivated to make a career change into software development. I originally expressed hesitancy while considering EFA, although a precursory visit to the facility to meet current... Read More staff and students convinced me of the extensive resources available to current and former students.

Pros:

Eleven Fifty's greatest benefit is teaching students to grow independently. The program may begin with some hand holding while learning the fundamentals, yet the program ends with nearly complete autonomy in the learning process. Essentially, one learns to drink from a firehose, not to drink everything from a hose. The practical benefit is that we learn how to pick up a new language on our own rather than relying on an instructor to guide us.

The very benefit of developing the skill of autonomous learning is can present challenges for those who are accustomed to many types of post-secondary education. One must walk into this program with the full intent that they will be teaching themselves rather than relying on a teacher. The staff is very transparent about this transition as well as the work commitment at the beginning.

A possible "con":

The transient nature of the tech industry is reflected in the day-to-day learning process at EFA. Changes throughout the course can be viewed as disruptive or unfair for individuals that expect a static and fixed curriculum, yet this is not how the industry works. Instructors and mentors can change, project scope can change, and opportunities can appear or disappear with little notice. Anyone who walks into this program with the mindset that things WILL change and faces changes as a learning opportunity will exit the program better prepared for a working world.

Suggestions:

Much of this suggestion is due to circumstantial changes for MY cohort specifically, but I would have preferred more opportunities to participate in mock interviews.
