Hi! What motivated you to start a bootcamp?
Deep learning is the single most important technology trend in the last decade and Ivy Data Science fills a gap in the Data Science Bootcamp market by specializing in Deep Learning. Up till now, Data Science Bootcamps have done a good job of teaching general Machine Learning algorithms but today Deep Learning has superseded a lot of these algorithms. IDS provides bespoke training from top University Data Scientists focusing on the latest algorithms for Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Deep Learning is fascinating because it exploits the large amounts of data being produced today to build solutions to problems that exceeded human understanding. Big Data would be a problem without Deep Learning because companies need a methodology that can make use of the data. Our curriculum is designed to teach students this methodology so they can provide substantial long-term value in companies.
What successes have you had with your first few cohorts?
Our first cohort in New York City and started September 19th! We are also launching in Boston, and Washington, DC. The Ivy Data Science Bootcamp is an intensive program that evaluates its students through code assessments and TensorFlow labs to ensure they have a strong grasp of the material. Our program has a final assessment provided by us and our Harvard Innovation Lab partner, Experfy, after which students have exclusive access to short-term and long-term consulting projects. This will be a great opportunity for students to gain experience with real clients.
What plans/dreams do you have for your bootcamp over the next 5 years?
Our goal is to provide Deep Learning training in all the major US cities and abroad. The value of Deep Learning is still being realized and post grads in the natural/computer sciences are uniquely positioned to transition into Data Science and Deep Learning research. These students will be able to utilize their analytical and scientific skills to develop and implement Deep Learning algorithms that will shape the services and products we use everyday. We believe that Deep Learning will impact the future of humanity in a big way and we want to be the leaders in training the minds that will shape this AI revolution.
Any advice for students looking to join a bootcamp?
The key to success is having a strong analytical mindset and a passion for new technologies. We usually find these candidates come from the natural or computer sciences. Students joining our program should have only one thing on their mind, Deep Learning. When we interview candidates, their passion for Deep Learning should be so evident that we must accept them!
Any advice for people who want to start a bootcamp and/or start teaching code?
Starting a Bootcamp takes a major commitment from all involved because the goal is to provide long-term value. You have to identify the market trajectory and design courses that will provide the most value for students. Considerable market research was done before creating our goals and curricula. We talked to industry leaders, company executives, and students who graduated from other programs to really understand the gap in the market and design a better course.
Do you see bootcamps replacing college for parts of the population?
We see them as complementary. The domain or application specific skill set a college education provides is still very relevant. Our Deep Learning Bootcamp provides the tools needed to apply that knowledge to solve specific problems in those domains which until very recently were unaddressable. Education continues to go through a major disruption and specialized training programs are becoming extremely valuable. Due to the accelerating rate of change in technology, bootcamps are far more aligned to address this shift in the education paradigm.
What is the job market like where your bootcamp is based?
Bootcamp graduates will be positioned to take on roles as Data Scientist, Deep Learning Researchers, Business Intelligence Modelers and more. We also offer career transformation courses for working professionals and recent graduates who want to cross-train into a Data Scientist position. The demand for Data Scientists in New York City far exceeds the supply, even more so for people with Deep Learning skills and experience, and demand will only increase as more companies realize the competitive advantage of implementing Deep Learning.
