My name is Ben Linn and I joined Practicum Software Engineer program in August of 2022. I wanted to learn coding and gain knowledge in the areas I love which is all things computers and tech, gizmos, and gadgets. What better way to do so then go to the... Read More source and do that with coding. I chose Practicum due reviews just like this one based on feedback of other students and due to the length of the course. Many courses are shorter in by months, I figured I needed the best training and guidance in a complex and growing industry. There is no rush, and it is a learning process. Boot Camps are still faster than college and 10 months is shorter then 4years, so this also was a bonus and the online and seeing the course laid out is a bonus. I am very fortunate for myself to be an office manager at an accounting firm and very flexible hours due to tax season being busier during January through April so able to go very hard on my studies currently and still perform my duties for my current job. I love the go at your own pace and time because everyone’s schedules are different. Everyone comes from different stages in life. I have two kids a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old and married so my life is very busy at home. My family supports my passion in this as well and sees their dad and husband trying his best to pursue his passion even later in life, it’s never too late! Practicum is setup 100% online based which helps me succeed and be more efficient. They use Slack, which is an online chat platform, but more than just a chat, it is a messaging app that keeps students and businesses directly connected, for projects in their environments. You can share work, do video meet ups, audio and much, more. The homework or every day work is based on course work. You dive into the chapters with either reading the text and then do course work and examples based on the course work you just went over. Sometimes there is video examples which are very beneficial that explain the chapter and what the next desired course of action. Everyone learns completely different, and the staff of managers, tutors and enrollment take this into factor. Currently I am 40% the way through the course and been enjoying the learning and every minute. Even when I hit the brick wall on coding and stumped. I have gained new tools from the staff that give me better understanding how to deal with what to do when you encounter a problem. I have been in the workforce for 19 years myself. I have been a manager for over 12 years and the information of knowing when to ask for help and its ok to has been huge for me as well. These are not just school lessons; these are life lessons that we carry into the real word and applicable in our day to day lives. The daily zoom and tutoring are done with office hours and course work, based on the availability of the tutors. They set up their schedule prior for all to see it is posted so the students can see the hours to gain help online and get extra additional aid on either projects or course work. I need to see and work 1 on 1 with the tutors it is very important for me. Some are audio learners, some are visual. I am visual, and need that show me with examples, pictures, PowerPoint, and anything else you have that is useful to learning. I have been very impressed with the tutors’ abilities and the students. I feel honored just to be around such a great and knowledgeable crowd, and hoping the knowledge keeps rubbing off onto me. They also have a career program. This program starts earlier than expected which is a key to success. They prepare you for the aftermath of preparing the job search and how to start the networking process after you complete the course and graduate. I would be clueless what to do even with knowledge in hand, so this helps on what directions to start in, and a head start with some guidance in the right direction and early. You start working during your time in the course, so you are not on completion of graduating rushing and scrambling to throw something together. At first, I even found myself overwhelmed with this, why are they talking about career right now I am still working on the course, I now understand why and seeing how fast life is moving and how many job applications the aftermath takes for the process, it is a good thing they focus in on the resume and cleaning up all the networking. Thus far my experience has been everything it has been chalked up to be. They have delivered as in Practicum on all fronts. Sometimes companies or industries say one thing do another, thus far been very good on everything they claim. They are very much on the student’s side and value the opinions so if you have feedback as well your comment does not go onto deaf ears, your comment can be applied. I have seen my comments firsthand actually applied. This means they care about their students and the voice and value your voice and will do their best to help you along the process make this a smooth journey. Thanks Practicum Staff and tutors for making my journey thus far easier and helping me learn software engineering and coding. My goal throughout this course has not been to be the top student but to be the most improved and get better each day on understanding. To start I was skeptical after attending two other programs and not receiving much, if any , assistance when approaching problems. Studying with Practicum for just over Three months, I have learned more, created more and felt more confident, than in my year and a half of self study! Practicum has a wonderful structured curriculum consisting of sprints, that push you to do your best over a certain amount of allotted ed time.It blew my mind how I went from just knowing a little, to writing full fledge, Professional Websites that showcase the skills I have learned. The interactivity of the software Engineering Program has built in on-site features, creating an immersive workspace environment, without the need to go back and forth to other applications. All the course material can be found super easily! If you're on the fence about a coding bootcamp, you won't regret joining Practicum and meeting its wonderful team members.

Let me start off by saying that I love this program. When I was looking into different program options for software engineering, I needed something flexible to fit my 60 hour work schedule. You can join different tutor sessions whenever you’d like, and it is self paced with deadlines for each topic. The layout of the portal is spectacular. It’s reassuring seeing that the software engineering software is well engineered, for a lack of better words. The price is also very good. Much much cheaper than other boot camps. They have many payment options and frequent sales. They also have a free intro course that is taken beforehand, and it gives you a really good feel to what is to come in the program. It is also fairly fast paced, clocking in at 10 months long. I think that is a perfect amount of time, as it pushes you to move forward, while allowing time for learning the content. To summarize, there really is no reason to not join!

I have always been interested in software design, be that in the form of web design or app/game development. I've always had a particular interest in videogames and the processes that make them come to life. Practicum happened to come to me at just the... Read More right time for me to be able to motivate myself to get on track with creating a career for myself and finally fulfilling my dreams. I had considered others before, but something about Practicum reached out to me and allowed me to push through all of my personal barriers. I'm part of the way through their Software Engineering bootcamp at the moment, and it's been a wholly pleasant experience every step of the way. Everyone in the community is so helpful and no matter how much i mess up my schedule, someone is always there any time of the day to help me when i have an issue. The main classwork is done through an interactive coding platform that works really well in my experience and is extremely user friendly, and the deadlines for projects are more than reasonable. I highly recommend Practicum based on my experiences and i hope to see a lot of new faces in the future.

The flexibility that Practicum affords is incredible. I live in Botswana so my time zone was hard to match with many other Bootcamps that did require you to attend live sessions at times convenient only for USA time zones. The tutors and especially the... Read More Community Managers are great at checking in on you and making sure you are progressing and all your needs are met. They don't only care about your academics they care for you in terms of keeping you motivated and in good spirits, always encouraging you and pushing you to finish the program. I'm on Sprint 10 out of 17 and I have been delighted with the program. The material can be challenging but I feel that I will be able to come out of the program confident to do actual real-life work off the bat, so it is worth the effort.

I came close to switching to more of a computer science/info system related degree, but stuck at it. I ended up working for a financial service company in a more data analyst/migration role as a contractor and found tech as a career path more fascinating and challenging. I decided to want to expand my skills to help my advancement in my career, which led me to Practicum. Why you chose Practicum for your Data journey and how you study with us (how you organize your studying, how many hours you spend, what learning activities you participate in, etc.); I chose Practicum because I liked the deadline driven aspect. It gave you a certain amount of weeks to finish a sprint. This helped me to stay focused, and disciplined in my studies. The tutors are great and super helpful! The community actually does help each other when needed. The material can be difficult, so I am grateful to have a team that are patient and understanding on how every individual learns at their own pace. What Practicum’s features you like most of all (interactive platform, projects, learning team, Slack community, workshops, etc.); how Practicum helped you in your Data journey and your goals of becoming Data Analyst or Data Scientist; I enjoy the projects the most. They get you to think and understand the "Why" of certain steps to complete the project. What useful tips and advice you can give to those who are just at the beginning of their coding journey. Don't compare yourself to others, and believe in yourself. The work can be challenging, but if you put in the effort, the Practicum team will help you out. Cons- The only thing that can be frustrating is the time it takes for certain questions to be answered.

I found Practicum at the perfect time in my life. Standing at a crossroads of choices I was searching for an opportunity to enter the coding field without vacating my current position, and it was difficult to track down a solid bootcamp that could be... Read More done part-time and online, until I came across Practicum. Pros: Practicum has a tightly knit curriculum that follows the agile methodology, which some of you may be familiar with. It's a framework to complete tasks that utilizes 'Sprints' rather than deadlines. Being about 3 months in, I am confident in my abilities to support a front-end team, and I still have much more left to learn from the program. The curriculum itself is well-made and easy to digest, however, if you are not a fan of self-learning I could see how this could get difficult (some people prefer to learn in a traditional, teacher's lecture style, and this program does not have that). They give you the full responsibility on how you decide to manage your time, and also lessons on time management. These lessons include tactics to divvy up your study time to maximize efficiency while also maintaining your focus and energy. The tutors are all very knowledgable and provide adequate support as well as perfectly divided attention to each student that needs it. The community managers are very supportive and there are many systems in place should you need some more time or support! Cons: As mentioned before, they do not have traditional style teacher lectures as I know some would prefer, but I personally learn better on my own so this was no issue for me. I struggle with self-pacing and making sure I am allocating my time properly, however I feel that through the curriculum I am improving on this skill and am confident i will be a stronger time manager by the end of my tenure. Conclusion: Practicum is a perfect fit for those that have been thinking about jumping into coding, but don't want to give up or vacate their current obligations just to enter a new and unfamiliar field. This however does not mean the curriculum is easy and can be done willy-nilly. The presented concepts are challenging and stimulate critical thinking, and you should be prepared to sit in front of your screen pondering the solution to a single problem for hours (For those like me that like to arrive to solutions on their own, if not you can easily search out support from the tutors or even the internet)! Such is the nature of coding...

Pros: The platform where you learn the theory and practice coding is very learner friendly and there is support within the platform if you get stuck. Lots of office hours and seminars to keep you on track and learning from actual people in this career.... Read More Flexible deadlines have kept me on track and motivated and the Community Manager has been amazing helping me when I need a few extra days, it helps make it not so stressful. The project focused format is excellent because you are able to get real experience and generate real usable code, all within the first month! They offer job support. There have already been many webinars to get us informed and planning for our future after practicum. I think this will be a very useful tool once I am ready. Cons: Its not a cheap program, though in my experience it has been worth it. Time differences mean I have had to wait to have a question answered, this is only a con because I get antsy when I am stuck. Its not easy!! This is a tough program you are learning a lot very quickly and it has been very tiring at times. If you are a parent and working full time (me!) there wont be much time for anything besides studying. On that same “con”: one thing about the program that has been inaccurate is the predicted time each sprint takes. They often claim a sprint will take a certain amount of time but as a total beginner it often takes me much longer.

As as analyst, who needs to make good projections for proper planning, I realised that I needed to up-level my skills to push my carrier. I spend around 20 hours per week, and that's enough for me to keep up with the course plan. So there's no problem to combine the studying and working, all main workshop sessions are held on Saturdays, and tutor sessions, where I can ask everything are held daily in the evening. So it's super convenient for me. I also like that there're many ways to get help if you're stuck. There's active community in slack, and I can ask for anything at any time and share my thoughts with the others. And sometimes I use support chat button in the planform itself, and it's 24/7 so I can get answers immediately at any time. I really enjoy studying platform and environment a lot. Information is well structured and it's easy for me to go through the course. And what I like most of all, that there's never too much theory. Each piece of information goes with the exercises and my mind is always concentrated and I can learn the material in a very efficient way. I also like the feedback, which I get after submitting module projects. Even if I did everything correct, the tutor shows alternative more efficient solution and useful hints. Before joining the course, I hesitated a lot, was afraid that it would be super hard for me. But so far with every next module I want to study more and more. So don't hesitate, and if you decide to join this course, just do not be afraid to ask all unclear points, there're a lot of people to help you and you'll enjoy you study journey!
