"Not worth the money"

The short answer is the course is a full stack program, but it's absolutely not worth the money. I completed approx 70% of the learning material and submitted 3 projects before deciding that the Code Institute boot camp was a waste of time. Online boot... Read More

Official Response from Code Institute

Hi Keith,

It’s disappointing to read your thoughts on our Full Stack Software Development programme. However, some of your comments are unfair and incorrect.

Firstly, we would like to point out that our programme is incomparable to any free online coding... Read More

Regarding your issues, we have highlighted some points below.

- We receive very positive feedback on the HTML Essentials section of our programme, and it scores very highly. The requirements for the challenges may appear strict because we want to test what you’ve just learned in this unit, not what you may have already learned in previous units.
- The Assessment Handbook on the LMS provides details of the requirements for each project and the criteria against which it will be assessed.
- Mentors are available to bring their industry expertise and guidance to all students working on projects and a broad range of session times are accommodated.
- We have an amazing Community on Slack that includes not only students, but also staff, mentors, and tutors. It is also very important to note that many of our alumni partake in our channels to continually help others through their journey.
- Regarding our career crunches. The career seminars run live 2-3 times a week, generally at lunchtime. This time accommodates what our surveys have told us is the optimum time for most available students. Also, many of these seminars are recorded and available on-demand.

If you would like to discuss your project feedback or any other aspect of our course, please contact our Student Care team.

Kind regards,
The Code Institute Team.

Regarding how you learn, while there are enough materials on the programme to become a qualified software developer, we actively encourage students to figure-out areas by themselves, and we promote the use of Google, etc. This standard learning practice within the industry reinforces what a student learns, resulting in better projects, ideas, and creativity.

In terms of what you learn,

The central aim of the programme is to provide students with relevant and employable skills and a project portfolio that provides immediate proof of ability and relevance to employers.

We have a 600-hour programme that at its core is built upon the most popular and relevant programming languages in the world today, namely HTML, CSS, Python and Javascript, SQL and NoSQL. Students are brought on a journey from having zero exposure to software development to creating and deploying cloud-based, socially-oriented commercial-grade E-commerce platforms with all the functionality and User Experience qualities that projects of that magnitude entail.

Along the way, students demonstrate their skills by submitting two Front End projects and two Full Stack projects that act as their source of truth for future employers and collaborators.

The student journey begins with an introduction to HTML taught using hands-on coding challenges and a micro-learning pedagogy. By use of contextual learning, our students then reuse their knowledge of HTML to cover CSS. This culminates in a guided walkthrough of a Front End static web application where students are shown how to use HTML and CSS in ways that go beyond the mechanics of these languages and focus on usability.

This approach is continued throughout the programme, where students continually reuse the skills, tools, libraries and techniques covered in previous learning content in building on their competencies.

To equip the students with the skills to use alternative Full Stack architectures in future, they are exposed to two major Full-Stack Frameworks, namely Flask and Django. Not only do these frameworks act as development accelerators, but they also instill the understanding and usage of software development patterns such as the Model/View/Controller.

In addition to the use of relational databases and mapping tools, the programme reflects the the huge growth in the use of NoSQL databases by covering the use of MongoDB - the most popular NoSQL database management system in use today.

To keep the programme current for both students and employers, we rely on and teach the use of third-party libraries, frameworks and tools like the ones mentioned above. The interfaces to and versions of these can often change quite rapidly. These are also common occurrences in the software industry and part of the rapid acceleration and evolution of a Software Developer’s toolkit. A Software Developer’s most important attribute is the ability to problem-solve. The ability to adapt to a sudden change in how a technology is presented or accessed is fundamental to a successful software development career. However, we have always been committed to ensuring that learning content reflects the latest developments in these tools.

Our assessment criteria are derived from the learning outcomes, which in turn are derived from the syllabus. This ensures that there is full alignment between the course content and what must be achieved in each assessment. The assessment criteria specify what needs to be achieved but do not detail how, as that is what is covered in the course content. The criteria are published on the LMS, and these same criteria are used by the assessors. Students receive individual feedback on each project, informing them how their project performed against each criterion. We cannot comment publicly on an individual student’s performance; however, this would have been specified in the feedback issued.

As mentioned earlier, we would like to help you if we can. Please feel free to contact our Careers Team or Student Care.

Kind regards,
The Code Institute Team
