I'm making my career change after nearly 12 years as active duty to learn how to code. If you'd approached me 7 months ago and asked me to code anything, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Now I would ask you what you want of your website and can help... Read More get you the product you want! It's difficult since there's a lot of material-you aren't really expected to complete every single thing, but with enough hands on time it starts to click. Aside from learning how to code, I also had many career based discussions. Setting up linkedin profiles, mock interviews, etc. This is a skillset I hadn't developed in the slightest prior to the course, but I can now confidently apply to jobs in the field knowing once I have an interview set, I know what I need to do to succeed and land the job. If I ever have questions or need support with a job I've applied for I can easily access the right people to get that assistance. One issue my cohort in particular had was a change of instructors about 2/3's the way through the course, and it didn't feel like the new instructor quite had a grasp on the material. Not that he wasn't capable of coding but didn't know what expectations of projects were supposed to be, which lead to confusion for many in my cohort. I wouldn't expect this as part of the typical experience, but do want to note everything pertinent to my experience. There were also several times the material was a bit dated/incorrect, making references to webpages that no longer existed. Not the biggest deal, but early on in the course when you're assigned homework and you're striving to succeed it can really drive you up the wall wondering if you were following instructions incorrectly. Despite these issues I had an amazing time and learned many great skills!

My experience in this program was amazing, I went from understanding the bare minimum about software and development to being fully competent in creating full-stack applications. My arsenal of coding tools over doubled through this course and the connections... Read More have been great. The instructors were very helpful and always there to guide but not hold your hand. I have had a wonderful time in this course and sad but excited to see it end.

I over all had a great experience with the program, going from not really knowing much about programming to being able to create a full stack website and the understanding of core programming and computer science concepts. They do a very good job at teaching new concepts and then putting that knowledge to practical use right away. I learned more in 18 weeks than I ever thought possible. By the end of the course, I am now able to build full-stack applications using languages like HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Postgres. This was an opportunity of a lifetime. The online content of program is nicely paced helping students to establish the fundamentals of software engineering before diving into more complex problems. The career services team is dedicated and constantly working to bring in prospective employers to help students build out their network and help them in their process of gaining employment upon completion of the course. The time I have spent in this course has been difficult, but very rewarding and I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to make the transition into software engineering.

In addition to teaching you core programming and development skills, staff will also actively help you to prepare for, search for, and obtain a job in the industry. I came into the program knowing nothing about programming. The Galvanize staff has an amazing curriculum that made it possible to become fluent where I feel confident to take on this new career field! The instruction team made the class feel like a family... Read More of peers rather than just a regular class. They were extremely helpful in every aspect to include coding, soft skills and career help. The curriculum could use a revamp as there is a few outdated modules but even with those, the instructors were able to adapt and show us the proper, newer information without any issues. I highly recommend Operation Level Up and Galvanize as a whole to anyone thinking of switching careers or getting a refresh. My cohort was an amazing group of individuals who I would not change a single one of them. The biggest challenge for anyone is truly time management. There are times where you will find yourself working past class time and even on the weekends. It is vert important to inform your loved ones and family about possibly having less time than usual to do other activities. Speaking for myself, I was able to find a great balance between school work and personal time but it took a few weeks before I found out what worked best. As far as coding, you will feel lost at times and like you may not be cut out to do this type of job but if you are persistent and keep on, you will achieve your goals. To summarize, this course seriously made me feel that I am now able to continue my growth in the software engineering field compared to before I started where I felt that I was not made for this. Huge thanks to Galvanize and everyone involved in my learning as well as those who grew alongside me in my cohort. NOTE: Hack Reactor and Galvanize are essentially the same school but was not listed. The course is long, and at times quite difficult, but I don't believe that anyone should feel that it is impossible. The staff works tirelessly to tailor the experience to you so that you can learn and manage your life in a reasonable timeframe. Not only do you take the time to learn how to become a software engineer, but you also have a lot of opportunities to improve your career readiness during this time with countless professional workshops as well as guest speakers looking for prospective employees. If you think you can't do it, I started out barely being able to turn on a computer to design sleek, user-friendly, and modern applications. If I can do it, so can you.
