Washington University Boot Camps

I do not know what the standard is compared to other bootcamps, so I can only give my opinion based on my experience. The instructors are very supportive and helpful, and the tutors are the same. The course does contain a great deal of good information... Read More and offers lots of hands on learning opportunity. My biggest complaint with the course is that it is very fast paced. I understand it is supposed to be a bootcamp, but it becomes very overwhelming very quickly. I think calling it "part-time" is a bit deceptive considering there is 9 hours of class-time, and you should be spending an extra 20+ hours outside of class. If you're struggling on a particular week, it will take even more time. It really says something that my instructors and TA said on multiple occasions on how they didn't have enough time to go over everything on a particular subject, so we as students are just left to figure the rest out. I think it could use a little bit of an extension. An extra 2 to 4 weeks would allow much more breathing room, but also it would allow for better retention for the students to not always be cramming information for 6 months straight. My other complaint is about how much self teaching is done. when I think of a bootcamp, I think of a structured, regimented experience where it is guided every step of the way and you are told exactly what to do. With this coding bootcamp, it just has the very fast-paced aspect of normal bootcamps, but not as much of the guidance. We have 3 hours of cramming information as quickly as possible, and then we're essentially on our own. There are 30 minutes before and after class of office hours that you have to share with the rest of the class, then you get 50 minutes of a tutor. The remaining time you are expected to teach yourself veyr complicated subjects that you have little to no experience with. It gets worse with each week as the subject matter becomes more complicated. If the part time bootcamp was allowed to have 2 tutor sessions a. week, that would be a huge game changer. The stress of the pace and the self-teaching aspect definitely pushed me to some difficult points and really negatively impacted my personal life. Even adding in a break week at some point in the middle of the course (like a long movie intermission) would allow students to either decompress and live a nomral life for a moment, or catch up on subjects they were behind on. An extra tutor session and an extra couple weeks, in my opinion, would lead to much greater success rate. To me, it just seems unnecessary to cram it all in as little time as possible. If I have to take an extra month to start my new career while maintaining my sanity, I would take it. I'd pay an extra 1,000 or 2 for that.

This course is unprofessional and not supporter by WashU. It is WashU in name only. It doesn't have the brand that WashU does. This is run by Trilogy Education Services not by WashU and it is barely supporter by WashU. We were kicked out of our classroom... Read More 4 times over a 6 month period. WashU doesn't care about this course. This is basically a scam to get people to pay for the WashU name.

The other part of this that is terrible is the Career Services. They don't help you with anything. They have students all over the country. They have no knowledge of your local market. They will review your resume online but they won't help you in making any corrections. They feel that is not their job. You are better off hiring a professional for $200.

The course itself, the things we learned and the professor was really good but everything else outweigh that and ended up being a terrible course. You can find a much better course elsewhere. In the end I feel this was almost a scam.
