The problem? Shortage of Skilled, Experienced Personnel
In 2014, there were 238,158 unfilled cyber security jobs in the United States. The most severe challenge to the Information Security profession is the education vs. experience conundrum. Due in part to the shortage of human resources, many companies hiring in the cyber security industry have expressed the need to hire based on experience and skill rather than by what degree or certification the applicant holds.
It is experience with attacks and perhaps even unsavory hacking hobbies that can make the difference between filling a job with a talented defender, or with a salesman who has a pedigree but no grasp of the devil-in-the-details meat of cybersecurity.
