First of all, overall, I think this part time applied machine learning course which is a part of DS bootcamp did a fantastic job in following manner. Summary of Pros (Advantages): 1. Help me reshape and boost up my knowledge in machine learning algorithms... Read More and best practices 2. Showcase demo of real client project from the instructor (not from WCD curriculum) 3. Hands on labs and case study for each module (i.e., per algorithm: regression, classification, etc.) Summary of Cons (Disadvantages): 1. There is a bit of discrepancy between course outline (PDF) file vs. actual curriculum delivered throughout the course • Ex 1. Course Outline said: covering two capstone projects but actually we covered only one final ML capstone project… • Ex2. Also, I don’t know if this is because of recent changes in course curriculum but each week module was not delivered in the order as outlined originally in the Course Outline. So, it was bit confusing to follow it. 2. Lacking few solid contents that would give a boost to this course Ex 1. Although a few labs and use cases are helpful, yet I think this can be improved much better on couple of aspects. 1) align specific use cases/labs for industry domain/business problems (i.e., K-mean clustering lab to tie with “customer segmentation” from retail market data etc., building a recommender system with movie dataset etc.) Ex 2. In comparison to first half of course contents, second half of course contents I felt like quality of labs and use cases diminished a lot. For example, it would have been helpful to have a lab session on effect of neural network architecture (i.e., # of neurons, hidden layer sizes etc.) and some other interesting lab of image classification etc. Ex 3. Having a limited time, I fully understand but it would have been so much great to cover content about how do we deploy python codes (i.e., modular functions or class doesn’t really matter) in real production environments (i.e., web app like Flask framework or Cloud environment)? I am not sure this content is covered in another course (i.e., big data for data scientists, etc.). Because that is the point that Shaohua always mention in his AMA/free WCD information sessions. 3. Required a bit improvement in resourcefulness of TA office hours. Ex 1. 1st incident – one of students asked about why do we drop dummy variables in pd.get_dummies(), TA could not explain the concept thoroughly and I kind of jumped in the Zoom chat to provide detail explanation using a simple example (i.e., gender variable with values of M, F and Others). Perfectly, I understand that as a human we don’t necessarily know and have all the answers but that was one of fundamental question that I felt like TA should aware of it. I have no doubts about technical/coding knowledge but this incident prompt me a question. Ex 2. 2nd incident – there was one time I joined WCD office hour session during the break week where we can join the call and ask questions about the capstone project. However, as soon as I joined the session I got kicked out and with no further explanations/directions/notices. For example, if someone else (other students) is having a call already please contact me later or schedule a meeting separately I think this kind of notification is normally expected. I was a bit disappointed about this because I think the TAs didn’t act professionally to address or notice this issue. So, because of this experience I didn’t really bother to join another call and ask questions (i.e., just recap on materials covered by instructor and search on Google to find my own answers.). In summary, I think this kind of lacking in customer service mindset should be aligned well with TAs and staffs to interact with students. In other words, try to wear a student shoe as you were LONG TIME AGO… 4. Some minor administrative stuffs on WCD website/slacks Ex1. Mismatch/discrepancy in actual course start dates: WCD course website and course enrollment application form. This causes me a bit of problems on re-scheduling some of my important appointments/vacation plan. I raise this issue to program manager in which he acted professionally and promised it would not happen again which I highly appreciated a lot. Ex2. Capstone Project Group Assignment/Presentation Roster: this is just minor nuances but I thought it was bit disorganized to help out which students are forming a group or an individual presenter. Then after that what is the order of capstone presentation, I suggested in “general” thread of slack that whatever platform works (i.e., Google Sheet) with template, this can be more organized and sorted out clearly who are in what group/individual and what order are we presenting etc. Lack of organization does seem a bit of chaotic too me not sure about other students’ experiences. Ex3. Learning Materials Upload: in most cases, program manager did a fantastic job on keeping track of posting/uploading course learning materials on WCD learning portal (over the weekend) prior to having lectures on start of each week (i.e., Tuesday session). However, sometimes there was a bit of delay so I couldn’t prepare myself before attending the lecture since the course pace is very fast and heavy in contents. 5. Overall course delivery/pace Overall, course is really great with contents and everything. However, sometimes I think the delivery of lecture are too fast that I got lost track of concepts/explanations. In addition, time to time, the instructor seems a bit rush to complete the lectures (i.e., given there are a lot materials to be covered in the course). Perhaps, WCD staff should re-visit and think about how can you improve the overall course delivery experience and finding the right pace. Please note that I have been big fan of WCD for their willingness to host great free informative sessions/workshops. That is why I was super confident enough to sign off on this amazing applied ML course – I really think that my education budget is well spend on the best course. However, due to some cons (i.e., points/examples) that I mentioned earlier in the above section, I cannot give 5-star ratings. I really hope that WCD continue to seek improvement in their curriculum and become one of the best DS/ML bootcamp in North America (i.e., even in the world).
