Data Analytics: Reasons to Love ItBy: Roberta Phillips, Content Manager at Ubiqum Code Academy
When you consider that in 2020 the world will generate 50x more data than it did in 2011, it is no wonder that the field of data analytics is fast becoming a highly prolific field of study, and those who work in it some of the most sought after professionals on the job market. The IDC reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning will grow from $8 billion in 2016 to $47 billion by 2020, thus requiring very talented minds to manage such tasks as creating machine learning applications, implementing tight cyber security, and extracting and analysing big data to produce useful business insights.
In light of this very high demand for skilled Data Analysts and the fact that this is not being met, and will continue to struggle to do so, we see the emergence of data science bootcamps. Ubiqum Code Academy is one of them, and operates in Barcelona, Berlin, and now Amsterdam. Offering totally immersive, five-month-long programs in data analytics and big data, Ubiqum Code Academy is unique in the fact that the "learn by doing" methodology provides a 100% practical learning experience whereby students take on the role of Data Analyst from day one, carrying out projects and using the same tools as they would on the job.
So, apart from being named the sexiest job of the 21st century, what is the appeal of being a Data Analyst? We talked to the mentors and students here at Ubiqum Code Academy to find out.
Why I Love Data Analytics
Curiosity and tapping into a rich minefield of information.
"Data science and data analytics are probably two of the hottest topics in IT (together with Big Data and Blockchain) in 2018. The personal reasons behind my love for data analytics can be linked to the motivations that led me to work in science and research in the first place," explains Luis Serra, Data Mentor at the Berlin academy, going on to say that: "Curiosity might be the engine that moves the career of every Data Analyst; Curiosity about what hidden information and patterns are in our data, which is the best way to proceed in each specific project, to find and detect possible issues beforehand, and finally, curiosity to keep learning new techniques and read about how to be a better Analyst."
Business insights and data-driven decision making
"Technology is disrupting the way we work, the way we live, and society as a whole. The field of data analytics helps us to achieve better results and empower everything we're doing; We're currently collecting so much data but we're not making good use of it. In studying data analytics and using programs such as R, I'm learning how to extract value from it and that's very exciting." - Gabriel Ristow, data student, Barcelona.
"Using the power of data analytics, we can make safer decisions in our companies and no longer have to rely only on gut feelings. The challenge of transforming raw data into useful business insights can only be performed by a well-trained human, and for this reason, it is one of the most interesting jobs of the 21st century." - Luis Serra, data mentor, Berlin.
"I want to become a Machine Learning Engineer, so first have to master data analytics. I believe that analysis is necessary in all decision making and that informed decisions are always much better than those that aren't backed by data. With so much data available, we must extract all that we can in order to make it useful. Aside from being used in product comparison, data analysis can help us learn a great deal about different people, regions, etc. and this is a great power to have as this helps you to make informed decisions." - Yash Saha, data student, Barcelona.
"We have to be able to manage and understand all this data and interpret it. I love data analytics because I like to solve problems and find solutions." - Rubén Martinez, data student, Barcelona
Career prospects and job satisfaction
"Data analytics allows you to develop professionally in a promising field that will keep growing and evolving in the coming years. As Data Analysts, we will be working on highly important business solutions and be key players in innovation, science, and society in general." - Luis, Data Analyst, and mentor for Ubiqum Code Academy.
