In mid-2018, Carfax, a leading e-commerce site for selling used cars, established an apprenticeship program with Thinkful to grow its talent pipeline. To date, the program has been a success— 5 Thinkful grads have been hired full-time and Carfax plans to hire more. On the Thinkful blog, we recently chatted with Carfax to understand what makes a good hire and why they’ve chosen to partner with Thinkful.
The job search and hiring process is more complex than you may think. For starters, the right hire needs a diverse set of technical skills, the ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with the team, and the grit needed to overcome challenges. The company must meet the expectations of the candidate, such as providing structure that fosters development and growth. Working in the technology sector, specifically as a software engineer, requires the right balance of technical hard skills and behavioral soft skills to get a foot in the door and stay there. It’s sort of like dating and, thankfully, Carfax and Thinkful have turned out to be a good match.
Carfax’s hiring team, including the Head of Consumer Experience Development (who runs the apprenticeship program and is the lead hiring manager), the Recruiting Director, and a technical recruiter, spoke about how Thinkful hires are passionate, self-motivated, and hard-working. Thus, wanting to hire and retain our grads was a no-brainer.
JP and Donald, two Thinkful graduates who landed jobs at Carfax, shared with us why they felt the learning experience was worth it. Before enrolling in Thinkful’s Engineering Immersion course, JP was a part-time Adjunct Professor and Donald was unemployed. They succeed because they know different programming languages and technology stacks, and also have soft skills and the ability to problem-solve in a variety of contexts.
