I attended the Rocket Academy basics course which included 12 lessons over 6 weeks. Classes took place every Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons - and they became something I looked forward to weekly. Note that the basics course teaches you JAVASCRIPT... Read More - not HTML or CSS. That said, it's an extremely important skillset. I started out knowing NOTHING about javascript but by the end of it, I created several programs to do simple calculations (like converting celsius to farenheit), chat bots, as well as three functioning games as pictured (scissors paper stone, beat that and black jack). The best part about Rocket Academy's basic course is the access to wonderful teachers. There's all sorts of self-learning materials and courses available on the internet for just about everything but it can never beat having an actual person guiding you verbally. If you're interested to upskill, learn about javascript and you're a highly motivated individual that's willing to put in time to learn for six weeks (they have pre-class, in-class and post-class assignments), GO FOR IT! Note that this is really just a basic crash course - it wouldn't be enough to land you a job, but it's a good way to start and help you see if it's a career worth exploring.

This coding basics course focuses on the Javascript language. The curriculum was well designed and well paced in my opinion as a full-time working mother. The pre-class readings involved short/concise video tutorials, as well as DIY exercises which were really effective in reinforcing the learning concepts - because practicing coding was really the best way in picking it up. Akira conducted the video tutorials and he was very clear and engaging. We had 3 project assignments to complete during the 6 weeks course, which were great milestones in measuring your progress and motivating you to keep going. It was really satisfying to see how far you've come upon completing each of the assignments. The course was also considerate to the different learning speeds between individuals. For every exercise or prooject, they divided the requirements into "base" of which all students are required to complete, and "comfortable" for those who needed the extra challenge. The course is facilitated by students from their current bootcamp batch - which is really smart in terms of resource management, and at the same time, gives their full-time students the chance to reinforce their learnings by teaching others. Nevertheless, the curriculum and classes are still being monitored by the founders - Kai and Akira, and everyone, including the student facilitators come off as genuinelly invested in you learning as much as you can and completing the course. Kudos to the team for the wonderful experience. It's definitely a great course whether you're interested in a career change or to just build an engineer mindset, which can help you better communicate with the relevant teams in your organisation. I'm really happy I stumbled upon them on a Google search, and really impressed at how well-organised they were in the execution and delivery of this course, especially the fact that this course was being offered completely free. I highly recommend this course!

I enjoyed the overall energy and content of this program. I got a pretty good grasp of basic Javascript in the 6 weeks and managed to write working code, even though I had zero coding experience prior to taking the course. The in-class pair programming format was especially helpful in reinforcing concepts through live problem-solving/coding. Cons: You will need to dedicate at least 3 solid hours each week in addition to the 4-hrs of class (and more as the course progress) to get the most out of the course. I wouldn't recommend this if you are unable to dedicate the time as it's very easy to fall far behind if you miss even one class.

This program really helps me to learn coding the fun way. Never would've thought I would even think about diving deeper to coding and it's world, but this joining this course really gives me chance to explore more and find the fun in coding. Highly recomended!... Read More

The instructor was the best, he even takes time out of lesson to give extra tutoring sessions! The special guest speaker each week is also extremely useful content that is appreciated! I joined the course with zero coding background, and did it while working full time as well, but the content was really well-planned and manageable. You can just follow along with the step by step instructions for the first few lessons and rest assured... Read More you'll catch on, as long as you keep up with your homework (you have to do that though!). The course instructors and fellow students are easily contactable on Slack, and super available outside of class time if you need more help. The class exercises also come with model solutions so you can learn from that too. Overall, there is just a genuine sense of delight when you get your code to work, which is something I've never experienced before and would definitely recommend to anyone else who is keen to explore the world of coding.
