For context, I already know basic Python, SQL, HTML/CSS and JavaScript, and have been learning on my own in the past 1 year with free resources like freeCodeCamp and The Odin Project. I was looking for an experience or course that could bring my skills up to the next level while I also develop in my current role. I had a lot of excitement for the course as I've been following the course since last year, but in the past 4 weeks of taking the basics course, there were many aspects that were not up to what I had expected, but it’s come to a point where ring fencing 4 hours to attend the sessions presented a high opportunity cost as compared to the learning I could do on my own. Some of the great things I found were: • Structure, learning material and methodology is sound and aligned to industry • Good way to create organic community of learners Some areas that can be improved on: • Conceptual review in classes were very touch and go, many instances where some of the questions I asked were not adequately addressed (i.e. variable assignment, equality operator differences == & ===). While these are technical, I felt that they were important to address as it potentially affects code quality down the line. • Pair programming and code review are good practices. Unfortunately implementation of these practices in class is haphazard and at times riddled with logistical issues. No proper introduction and setting the stage for a good pair programming experience (https://martinfowler.com/articles/on-pair-programming.html) or code reviews (https://www.atlassian.com/agile/software-development/code-reviews).

Going through the 6 months bootcamp has been an extremely enriching experience for me. The community... Read More they've nurtured is also very kind, and open to sharing knowledge. I was most surprised at the level of support I received from both Kai & Akira. They are genuinely interested in the welfare of their students. Not just for me, I saw this displayed in their approach to each student under their care.  I have been to another bootcamp before and although post-bootcamp support was there, it was only a one-time thing. However, at Rocket Academy there were constant check-ins, referrals, advice and encouragement. I would highly recommend anyone considering a role in software engineering to embark on their learning with Rocket Academy.
