Upon deciding to make a career shift, I saw an advertisement for Practicum, now TripleTen and realized moving into the tech industry would be a good idea for me. For a couple of weeks, I researched different programs – not wanting to settle on the first... Read More thing I saw, even though I ended up going with it. I found good reviews and feedback on Practicum’s programs which led me into the next leg of my journey to see what field I wanted to go into. Delving deeper into what was offered, I started looking into Software Engineering. I first spoke to a representative of the program, and spent a handful of hours on the introductory course. The conversation was very helpful and encouraging, but upon taking the time to do even the simplest tasks of what Software Engineering was, I wasn’t sure about it. I the decided to see if Data Science was more my speed – luckily, I have friends in the industry that I spoke to, but I was able to speak to another Practicum (at the time) representative for the Data Science program, and got encouraging information about potential careers, how my Criminal Justice degree would fit in with the field, and got access to the introductory course. Upon completing it, I decided it was for me and invested in the program. I was also encouraged by the fact that there is a career acceleration program upon completion of the program that, for data science, boasts a 100% placement for those that go through it into a data science career and seek a job. I made the decision to focus on learning a wildly different field than I came from, so became a full-time student once again, taking the course at a slightly faster pace than was advertised. I was able to focus solely on the program, sometimes spending 40 plus hours a week on my coursework (I think my record was close to 80 in a week), and had the option to be able to slow down to avoid burnout at other points. However, through my studies, I learned that it is organized in consumable chapters within the sprints, or units, that I likely could have worked at the same time as studying without too much change to the learning process I had adjusted my life to fit to. While going through the course, I’ve utilized the workshops that are held for each of the sprints, or watched the videos of past workshops hosted by experienced staff who work in data science, where techniques to better improve on what is in the lesson are applied in helpful ways. Even if the information does not directly apply to the sprint projects I was working on at the time, the information was always valuable in some way. There are also numerous, incredibly helpful tutors that hold office hours daily that do a fantastic job in answering questions, and helping myself and other students through the problems we face either during the coursework or on our projects. And possibly the most helpful feedback and assistance of it all is the code review that occurs within the projects themselves. The format is that I complete the project, submit it, then it is returned with comments and suggestions to improve the project, whether it be code I’ve written or analysis of the data, to get it to a satisfactory level – the feedback I’ve received has always been constructive and very helpful. The project alone has improved my skills in Data Science immensely, and would be worth having even if the workshops and tutoring were not available. The platform itself is also very easy to use. The lessons, coursework, and projects are all done through the website, so it is very user friendly and doesn’t require a lot of peripheral programs to complete. There is eventually a unit in the data science course on setting up your own personal working environment on your personal system to point you in the right direction to work locally if that is the preference. The community also shifted onto Discord from Slack while I’ve been going through the program, which is a popular platform that I was previously familiar with, and know to be an easy to use and popular platform for others, so communication with the TripleTen team, whether tutor or community manager, is very easy as well. I frankly could not have asked for or expected a more user-friendly experience, which is impressive for someone like myself who started out with only the most basic skills when it came to technology. Overall, the program has been very good for me as I had no real knowledge of the Data Science field, and no applied skills beyond critical thinking that would be useful for a career in it. I was able to build up my skills, such as coding in multiple languages – Python, SQL, and even something as simple as Command Line Interface – and gained confidence in both my work and myself over time while getting a taste of the different facets of what potential positions would demand of me. For those that are looking into the program, I would highly recommend speaking to a representative for the course, or courses, you are considering and taking the time to work on the introductory coursework offered to see what learning on the platform would be like along with getting a taste of what some of the more basic skills will be. The representatives TripleTen has are very knowledgeable in the fields they represent, and are genuinely interested in helping prospective students finding the right fit for them. The advice I would give to those that decide to move forward with learning from TripleTen is to set simple, achievable goals week-to-week, and to not get too discouraged if you miss the goals. The program is organized in such a manner that you can complete bite-sized chunks of material at a reasonable pace without overreaching and burning yourself out. This also means taking the time to recharge when needed – as you can get a lot of work done in a short span of time if you really focus down, but it’s also much easier to burn out when doing so because of the complexity of some of the information being presented along with the tasks to apply the skills being taught.

I love my Community Manager- Dina, she is awesome and works with you so well, and there are some amazing tutors almost always available. Sometimes I have a hard time following the lessons and studying in Theory, but I do eventually get it, and now entering Sprint 2. I cannot wait to see what I will continue to learn. SUPER INTENSE = SUPER SATISFACTION here, and its so far worth every penny I have paid for my tuition. I have no doubts if you want the best engineering learning, this is the bootcamp to choose. I ALSO have learned so much about myself like how I am teaching myself to pay more attention to syntax and grammar, trust me it matters! I have learned how satisfying it is to finish something even if there are a few things I missed, I can go back and in real time learn how to not repeat them. It takes a while to get some of the concepts, but I like the way Practicum has laid the Sprints out, even early into the bootcamp. Thanks Triple Ten! This company does a fantastic job of supplying very useful information in a concise way. Another thing I love is that sometimes they will give you an introduction to a topic but then offer links to you to explore if you want to learn more about it. The... My only constructive criticism I would offer is the skills seem not too difficult at the start, but the leap from lessons to projects can sometimes be pretty substantial. I am still in progress and have not gotten a new job yet or tried an externship, but looking forward to both.

The tutors have been super helpful with my learning process; whenever I struggle with a problem within a sprint or with a project, they are available to help and provide a thorough explanation. One of my favorite things about the program is the project after each sprint, which allows you to apply what you have learned into practical and real life project. Then reviewers give you feedback to improve your project until it is approved. My community manager always check in to see how I am doing, which I appreciate. Overall, TripeTen offers a comprehensive, interactive, and well-structured curriculum, making it an excellent choice for beginners with no prior coding experience.

I came into Practicum as a prior small business owner with roughly a decade of sales experience looking to be a career switcher into a data analyst or data scientist role. Below is a brief list of pros and cons that I have found thus far (roughly 1/3 of the way finished with the program): Pros: - able to work at your own pace - projects have direct real world application - projects have always been returned within 24 hours with feedback (even extra long projects) - interactive coding platform that provides feedback in small steps throughout the lessons - tutors provide worthwhile answers to questions within 24 hours - workshops have been generally useful but I did stop attending them live in favor of watching the recording so I can skip material that isn't as useful to me Cons: - sometimes the projects can be impacted by differences between regions i.e. how the the US handles certain types of data vs. Europe etc. This has caused a several hours worth of reworking portions of the projects which could be prevented by simply putting the necessary items in the project descriptions. - even though you are able to work at your own pace it seems the program is generally geared toward a part time schedule instead of full time. It would be nice if they had both options fully available. I've been completing the program by spending roughly 35 hours per week on the material and projects combined. Yet to be determined: - career program/prep - externships Overall thus far I am pleased and am confident the material I'm learning will prepare me for a data scientist role.
